I think people are so interesting. I am fascinated by the behavior of humans, even my own. Something I have noticed about us is that all of us have a safe place. Its essential. We have to have somewhere to go when life gets hard. And we are so desperate for a sustainable safe place, we will make it anything.
Drugs, sex, work, alcohol, Netflix, the gym, the beach, books, music, movies, and anything else you can think of…the problem is these things won’t last. Eventually it gets old, and it isn’t “Safe” anymore.
Growing up in my dad’s youth group there was a song he used to play all the time called Hiding Place. The lyrics go something like this:
“I have found myself a hiding place. I have found myself a secret place. In the shelter of Almighty’s love, in the safety of the Savior’s arms. I will run to the hiding place. I will run to the hiding place. Draw me ever closer to look upon your face.
Those my fears may overwhelm me, and troubles they surround. Though the wind rise up to take me, my hiding place is already found.”
Now I’ll be honest, this song used to really annoy me. I think because it’s really repetitive, and my dad played it ALL THE TIME!!
A few weeks ago I was feeling really overwhelmed. I have so much on my plate, and it works when all the pieces work together. However, on this particular day something was going wrong in every area. I used to have panic attacks, and I was feeling the old sensation of panic trying to overtake me. I remembered the old song my dad used to play, and I finally understood why he loved it so much.
Jesus is the only safe place that will sustain you. He is the only safe place that will never let you down. He is the only safe place that’s truly safe from all dangers.
“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty….He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.” Psalm 91:1, 4
This doesn’t mean that Jesus will make all of your problems go away. This is better. This means that when everything in your life is going wrong, when life becomes too much to handle, and you feel like you can’t take one more step…Jesus will give you rest. Jesus will give you strength, and He will sustain you. He will give you peace unimaginable. But you have to invite Him to that place. He doesn’t force Himself on us. He needs your permission to come into the deepest parts of who you are, and consume the darkness.
He loves you more than you can ever imagine, and you can trust Him. He is the safe place that will NEVER disappoint.
