Together.

A few months ago I had a dream that Jesus and I were walking and we were holding hands. We did some things in the dream, but the most significant part I remember is we held hands the entire time. When I woke up I started praying about what He wanted to show me. The word I kept hearing was together.

That dream started me through the month of December praying about this word and what it meant for me during this time. Quickly He showed me this was my word and focus for 2020.

As I was praying, I was reminded of a scene from the movie The Shack. Mack is in this boat in the middle of the lake and it starts breaking. He thinks he is going to sink and he starts to panic. Jesus starts talking to him and tell Mack to focus on him (Jesus) instead of the breaking boat. He says, “Don’t think about the pain. Don’t think about the past. Just look at me.” As Mack turns his focus to Jesus the boat goes back to being whole and floating on the water. Jesus then looks at Mack and says, “It’s time to get out of the boat.” Immediately Mack says no, he cannot possibly walk on water. Jesus then responds with this, “You are imagining a future without me, and that future does not exist. I promised to always be with you, right? I’m right here.”

Jesus promised us several times in His word that He would always be with us, yet we consistently struggle with anxiety, depression, worry, and doubt. We image a future where He is not with us and that future is just not possible.

I believe in 2020 Jesus wants to show us what it looks like to walk with Him in a practical way. What does it look like to recognize He is always with you throughout your day to day life. For example, as I sit here and write this, I feel him sitting on the couch with me. He’s in Jonathan’s seat right now. He’s smiling and encouraging me that someone needs to know He does not get bored with them. He loves being with you. There is no expectation that you are in a worship service 24/7. There is just being with each other. That is the joy.

Isaiah 54:10 says, “For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you. 

This verse reminds me that regardless of my circumstance or season – He never stops holding my hand.

Today friends, I challenge you to ask Jesus where He is in the room you find yourself in right now. What is He doing?

He is with you always. He didn’t promise it would be easy, but He did promise you would do it together. That is enough.
